PICTURE PROMPTS FOR PRACTICE    updated 4/5/08        Return to:     Picture Prompt Writing         Smartsparks.net

Here are several picture prompts that you may use to practice picture prompt writing in preparation for the HSPA.
Use the triangles to the left and right of the photos to scroll through all the photos. To copy a picture to your computer, click on the
large photo beneath the strip of thumbnail photos, right click your mouse and select "copy," move to a word processing document,
right click and select "paste" to position the photo.

Regular Education Students: Spend five minutes prewriting / planning the setting, conflict and
characters of the story. Spend twenty-five minutes writing the story with a beginning, middle, and end.

Students with IEP's: Spend five minutes prewriting and limit yourself to forty-five minutes to one hour of actually writing the story.
Keep in mind that the HSPA test booklet only provides you with two lined pages to write your story
. You cannot ask for more paper
to write a longer story. Practice writing smaller and legibly. Make every word count so that you write an outstanding story within |
the limited space given to you.

Teachers: email me at afrancis@smartsparks.net if you would like me to send you a PowerPoint presentation of these photos.
I have found it helpful to allow students time to speculate on circumstances surrounding many photos in addition to selecting
some as prompts for complete stories.
